Welp, even though I haven’t met any of my new students, school is officially back in session for all of us teachers. I started back to week on Tuesday and have had days full of meetings and planning since then. Where the heck did the summer go? Here’s what our week looked like…
1) Back To School Craziness
Y’all, I’m gonna be honest: it has been a ROUGH week of adjusting back to a school schedule for me. By the end of summer, my structured, Type A self starts to come out and I am excited to jump back into life with more rhythm and routine. But it has been rough to get out of bed this week and sit through lots of meetings (full of good stuff, of course, but still meetings). I felt kind of overwhelmed as I thought about all the things I had to do this week to prepare my classroom for students and get myself ready to jump into another year. I know I’ll be excited for the first day of school next Tuesday, but this week, I pretty much just wanted to stay in bed and do this all day (and yes, we do have a Duke pillow, because sometimes marriage involves compromise):
2) Mocha Brownies
I’ve said it before, but I have been a lazy bum when it comes to cooking this summer. We’ve had lots of cereal, smoothies, scrambled eggs, sandwiches, and other random easy things for about two straight months. But dessert? I’m all about it. I made a pan of these delicious mocha brownies this week and hubby and I devoured them in about 36 hours. SO good!
3) She Reads Truth
After reading this post by my lovely friend Kat, I decided to download the She Reads Truth app. I know I’m way late to this party, but it is SO good! I started out doing one of the 5 day hymns plans, and I loved the combination of Scripture, the beautiful words of classic hymns, and commentary by sweet, wise women like Ellie Holcomb. I’ve been feeling a little lost on where to go in my Bible for almost a year, and this has been a great way to get some direction. I just started doing the study on the Women of the Old Testament and I’m excited to jump into that too! Plus, they have these amazing pictures graphics you can use as your phone/computer background or share on social media so other people can join in the fun. How cool is that?
4) Dealing With The Hard Stuff
In some ways, this week was heavy. Some people very near to our hearts lost their sweet baby at 18 weeks, and it was such a reminder to us of how fragile and precious life is. We’ve had so many friends and people we love lose little ones to miscarriage, and it breaks my heart that all babies can’t come into this world healthy and ready to be held and adored by the mamas and daddies who have longed for them. I know God is good in the midst of all this, but boy is it hard, and I know their hearts (and ours) felt heavy this week. The study I did on She Reads Truth that morning was on the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul,” and I was praying this peace over our friends this week.
5) Royals Game
Ever since the world turned Royal blue last October, our house has been all about the KC Royals (and by that I mostly mean my husband). We’ve watched a lot of Royals’ games this year, and I will say I’ve grown to love this team that sometimes seems like a group of neighborhood boys just playing the game they love (especially when Salvy gleefully dumps the water cooler on the game’s MVP). We were able to go to a game Thursday night and it was fun to soak in some sun with my favorite guy and watch the Royals take on the Angels, the team I grew up rooting for. I may not follow any players or know any statistics, but I sure do love a good baseball game! And come on…doesn’t this at least make you smile a littttttle bit?
Enjoy your weekends, my friends! I know I’m excited to sleep in and pretend it’s summer again!

Back to school! It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?!
That mocha brownie looks divine.
I love She Reads Truth! I haven’t done the 5 Day Hymns plan yet… I’ll have to try that out!
I’m so sorry to hear of your friends’ loss. I’ll be praying for them… and you.
Blessings. Wishing you a lovely week.
xoxo

Lauren, your first picture was me this morning. I am excited for the routines fall brings, but some morning it’s just hard to get out of bed. I too love a good baseball game and finding direction in God’s Word. For me I’ve been using the Proverbs 31 #First5app and am loving the renewed sense of purpose in seeking God’s Word. : )
