When I envisioned our little one’s nursery, I imagined something calm, neutral, and airy with fun pops of color and whimsy. I love the look of DIY white mounted deer heads and wanted to incorporate them in a way that still fit with the bright feel of the whole room (you can check out the reveal of our son’s nursery in this post!). I threw these bad boys together using a few supplies from Hobby Lobby and an hour or so of work and I love how they turned out! They are so easy that I almost felt silly typing out the steps to make them (because it’s basically just spray paint and glue).
If you already have a can of spray paint and catch Hobby Lobby when they’re having a sale (or you’re smart and use that 40% off coupon on your phone!), you can make this project for super cheap and with very little work. And aren’t those kind of projects the best kinds?
DIY White Mounted Deer Head
Materials:
- Cardboard deer head (easy to find at Hobby Lobby)
- Wood slice
- Glue (hot glue, wood glue, or strong industrial glue should work)
- Whatever decorations you want to use
1) Spray paint the deer head.
I just spread out all my materials on a painting tarp on our garage floor and went to work. I did one coat and let it dry for an hour or so and then did a second coat to cover up any cardboard showing through. This is more of an art than a science, but I basically held each deer head by the tip of one antler and turned it in all directions while I sprayed until it was fully covered.
2) Glue to the wood slice.
Once the spray paint had fully dried, I applied glue to the back of the head and pressed it firmly to the wood slice. We first tried to use E600 glue, a powerful industrial glue I’ve used in the past to do projects I wanted to be sturdy. But my tube was super old and it wasn’t drying or coming out all that well, so we switched and tried some hot glue. It stuck pretty quick and is still going strong a few months later, so for now that seems to have done the trick!
3) Drill in to studs on the wall.
Since these are above our little one’s crib, hubby was very determined that they would be drilled firmly into studs. You might be able to use Command strips or nails, but we just screwed these directly into studs to make sure they don’t fall on a curious little boy’s noggin!
4) Adorn with garland, ribbon, or other fun decorations of your choice!
I’ve seen these be adorable with little bow ties, flowers, or other garlands hanging from them. I draped our little guys with some garlands I made of baker’s twine and yarn pom-poms and I love how whimsical and bright they look!
I love how these turned out and they really are so, so easy. I’m sure there’s a way to paper maché your own deer heads, but buying them from Hobby Lobby and spray painting them was so much easier!

I’ve honestly never been a fan of the mounted deer head, but I like how you added the little pom poms on it for a pop of color. That adds something to it for sure! Your nursery is so cute!
